Ford Dashboard Lights Guide

Ford Dashboard Lights

A (Hopefully) Helpful Guide to Ford Dashboard Lights

As drivers, we're certainly familiar with at least some of the dashboard lights we'll see, but rare is the individual that knows what all of them mean without having to either refer to the service manual, or some other source. Some indicators are harmless, like the turn signal indicator, but others can mean something serious is happening with your car. That's why it's important to know what the lights mean before they appear on your dash. Consult your owner's manual for more specific information on the indicators in your particular Ford model. Here are some of the more common dashboard lights and indicators that you may see:

Check Engine Light

Everyone's favorite. It means there's a problem with the engine, and it may lead to the system functioning abnormally. There are several possible causes for this light, so be sure to bring your vehicle to us as soon as possible for inspection.

Coolant Warning

Your engine's temperature has become too high! Stop the car and turn off the engine immediately so that it can cool down.

Oil Pressure Light

This light indicates the oil pressure in your vehicle is low. It's time for an oil change and an inspection.

Battery/Charging Warning

If you see this light, pop the hood. The battery voltage level is low, possibly due to a broken fan belt, faulty wiring or even simply the age of the battery. If you don't find anything wrong, bring your car in to us so we can have a look!

Door Ajar Indicator

This light simply means one of the doors or trunk is not closed all the way. Shut your doors, and keep on driving.

Tire Pressure Warning

A tire needs more air to create a more ideal pressure, meaning you should find a gas station with an air pump. Consult your owner's manual, pump your tires and check the poundage with a tire pressure gauge. The light should turn off in a few minutes after the pressure is corrected.

Brake System Light

This light has a wider definition than most. It can mean one of four things: your parking brake is on while driving, the brake fluid is low, there's an ABS problem or there is a bigger issue with the braking system. Release the parking brake and have your brake fluid checked.

Traction Control Indicator

This probably came on because the roads are slick! If you're in Kansas City, you'll see your share of this light come on from time to time.

Security Indicator Light

This light means there's some kind of malfunction in the security system. Make an appointment with us for an inspection.

Cruise Control

Cruise control has been activated. If you didn't mean to, pushing the brake or accelerator both should take your car out of that mode. If you meant to turn it on, keep on cruising!
