What Is Ford BlueCruise?

Ford BlueCruise is an available hands-free highway driver-assist system designed to help reduce some of the workload associated with highway driving. When the vehicle enters a compatible section of divided highway known as a hands-free Blue Zone, BlueCruise can help control steering, braking, acceleration, and lane positioning while the driver continues watching the road.

Ford currently reports more than 130,000 miles of compatible hands-free Blue Zone highways across North America. Coverage can change as Ford updates and expands the BlueCruise network, so drivers should use Ford’s current BlueCruise map when planning a trip.

Make Highway Driving More Comfortable

BlueCruise can assist with steering, braking, acceleration, and keeping the vehicle positioned within its lane. This support can make long stretches of compatible highway driving feel more manageable, whether you are commuting through the Kansas City metro or beginning a longer road trip from Lee’s Summit.

BlueCruise is not autonomous or self-driving technology. The driver must remain attentive, keep their eyes on the road, and be ready to take control whenever driving conditions or the system require it.

Driver-Focused Technology

BlueCruise builds on familiar driver-assist technologies such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering. A driver-facing camera monitors the driver’s eye gaze and head position to help confirm that the driver remains attentive while the system is engaged. Connected mapping and vehicle sensors also help BlueCruise identify compatible roads and respond to surrounding driving conditions.

How Does Ford BlueCruise Work?

Vehicle entering a compatible Ford BlueCruise hands-free Blue Zone

Step 1

Enter a Hands-Free Blue Zone

When your properly equipped Ford enters a compatible section of divided highway, the instrument cluster can display a prompt indicating that BlueCruise is available. These prequalified stretches of highway are called hands-free Blue Zones.

Step 2

Activate BlueCruise

When the system indicates that BlueCruise is available, use the appropriate steering-wheel controls to activate the feature. BlueCruise can then assist with steering, acceleration, braking, and lane positioning while the driver keeps their eyes on the road.

Activation steps and system settings may vary by model, model year, software version, and vehicle configuration. Consult the Owner’s Manual for instructions specific to your Ford.

Step 3

Remain Attentive and Ready

Depending on the vehicle and BlueCruise software version, available features may include Lane Change Assist, In-Lane Repositioning, or Automatic Lane Change. Feature availability varies, and not every BlueCruise-equipped vehicle includes every capability.

Continue watching the road and remain prepared to take control. BlueCruise may alert you to place your hands back on the steering wheel when the vehicle leaves a hands-free Blue Zone or when road, traffic, visibility, or weather conditions require driver intervention.

Explore the BlueCruise Highway Network

Ford reports that hands-free Blue Zones cover more than 130,000 miles of compatible highways across North America. Because coverage can be updated, use Ford’s current BlueCruise map to see where the system may be available along your route.
