Comparing the Ford Explorer and Chevy Traverse

Chevrolet introduced its redesigned, second-generation Traverse for the 2018 model year as a family vehicle that can accommodate seven or eight people, depending on the second-row seating (bench or buckets). While Explorer and Traverse have similar capabilities, the all new 2020 Explorer offers key advantages with its variety of models, available technology, engine choices and performance.

Horsepower

The standard 2.3LEcoBoost I-4 engine in Explorer produces nearly as much horsepower and superior torque compared to Traverse V6 with less displacement and fewer cylinders. The standard 3.6L V6 is the end of the story for Traverse performance. Explorer, on the other hand, offers an available 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine that gives it best-in class V6 horsepower and torque.

If there's something about the Traverse V6 engine that doesn't appeal to a customer, their only option is to choose a different vehicle. Explorer customers, however, have a total of four distinct power train options, including the performance-oriented Explorer ST and the Explorer Limited Hybrid. With a specially tuned 3.0L EcoBoost V6, the ST promises 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft.of torque. Environmentally conscious Explorer customers can select the Hybrid power train, which offers an EPA-estimated 27 city/ 29 hwy./ 28 combined mpg on the RWD model.
